Founded in 2016, Portland United Against Hate (PUAH) convenes community organizations, neighborhood groups, agencies, and local governments to combat hate. Through our ReportHatePDX tool, we track and analyze hateful incidents, guiding community leaders towards effective solutions. Our partners provide vital support services, while our workshops empower individuals to reduce harm, understand their rights, and contribute positively to civic life.
2023 Healing summit
Portland United Against Hate and the Coalition for Racial and Educational Justice hosted a three-day virtual event aimed at equipping individuals impacted by discrimination-based hate with resources and tools. The Healing Summit, was prompted by a concerning rise in hate-fueled attacks targeting youth from BIPOC, LGBTQ2SI+, refugee, and immigrant communities in Portland over recent years.
The Summit's objective was to empower community members by providing them with the knowledge and skills to recognize the effects of trauma resulting from hate incidents, navigate trauma in healthy ways, and explore self-defense options to enhance confidence and safety. The event featured four virtual workshops. The Summit opened with an empowerment-based self-defense class led by Rose City Self-Defense on Wednesday, October 25th, followed by a discussion on the history of the Pacific Northwest's anti-fascist movement facilitated by members of the "It Did Happen Here" podcast on the same day. On Monday, October 30th, the Fireweed Collective conducted a training session on emotional first aid. The Summit concluded on November 2nd with a workshop from Right To Be focusing on bystander intervention to support youth in public spaces.
