Connect2Complete: Equitable Pathways Summer Bridge

In partnership with Oregon Volunteers and the Corporation for National and Community Service, Campus Compact of Oregon's Connect2Complete: Equitable Pathways Summer Bridge AmeriCorps program places AmeriCorps members at community colleges to connect with and support high school seniors who are expected to attend a community college in the fall. Members will support newly-enrolled community college students throughout the summer to help ensure students have what they need to enroll and attend classes when term begins.

In Oregon, 10-40% of high school graduates experience summer melt and ultimately don’t show up to their chosen college in the fall after high school graduation.  Students of color, low income students, first generation students, and rural communities are particularly impacted by this.  Due to this, our programming is centered around utilizing an equity lens to tailor the program to the needs of these populations.

The Summer Bridge program is designed to increase interaction, guidance, and a sense of community and belonging to those high school graduates.  AmeriCorps members will provide high school graduates enrolled at a community college for the fall with intensive summer engagement activities with the goal of helping students feel a sense of belonging and value as they enter their college community.

AmeriCorps members will also connect students with culturally specific and/or student-led groups on campus and lead the students in service-learning projects.  This will provide students with increased knowledge of campus and community resources, increased understanding of how to fund their education, and an improved sense of connection to the institution and fellow students.  These interventions (marked by phone calls/texts, emails, invitations to the campus, service learning opportunities, connection with student/cultural organizations on campus, meeting financial aid and/or registration requirements, etc.) will help facilitate a relationship and encourage students confidently to show up in the fall.  Ideally, each participating community college will also host a year-round AmeriCorps member the for the upcoming school year who will continue supporting the summer students once they are enrolled.
Program Goals:
  • 24 members spread over 12 sites with each site receiving 2 members
  • Raise attendance rates of 320 K12 Students to above 80%
  • Each member should be working with a list of about 20 identified high school graduates (selected by the site)
  • 210 students will visit the college campus before beginning classes in fall
  • Over the 210 students, 76% (160 students) will complete 12 credit hour
  • Over the 3 year total of 630 students, 60% (378) will complete their associates degree
  • Contact with at least 500 high school seniors through email, text, or in person contacts throughout the year to ensure summer engagement
  • AmeriCorps members will ensure that high school students who begin classes in the fall will attend pathway counseling sessions offered at institution within 1st term
  • AmeriCorps members receive training on culturally responsive student engagement.  This will occur during Campus Compact’s pre-service orientation for AmeriCorps members
  • Percentage of students who are BIPOC receiving support and outreach through this grant will meet or exceed the percentage of BIPOC students of each high school engaged
  • Promote racial justice and equity in Oregon's educational institutions and their communities
