MLK DAY 2015

Life's most persistent and urgent question is: "What are you doing for others?"
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
We Made A Difference!
  • 657 Students Served
  • 1,643 Hours of Service
  • 24 Service Sites
  • $35,067 Economic Impact*
For the sixth annual MLK Day of Service, 657 college and high school students from ten campuses and community partners committed to serving in the Northeast Portland Cully neighborhood. Beginning with a morning rally at Concordia University, Jo Ann Hardesty spoke to students about the work of Martin Luther King Jr. and empowered them to continue their service throughout the year.

This year's theme focused on “Healthy Schools, Thriving Communities”. Students served at twenty four sites to support community identified projects including neighborhood clean ups, painting at neighborhood housing centers, graffiti abatement, community gardens, and other community beautification projects. The service projects and reflection activities prompted college student volunteers to reflect on the teachings of Dr. King, the value of education and community, and how they as students can help strengthen the relationship between schools and community. These themes were discussed amongst students at the closing rally celebration.

ABOUT

The MLK Day of Service is a collaborative of Oregon colleges facilitated by ORCC. To honor and celebrate Dr. King's legacy, we unite our community to serve the places that we live, work, and study. Annually, it is the largest mobilization of college students in the country on MLK Day.  This event is made possible by a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and Hope WorldWide.
