Campus Compact of Oregon Learning Communities
Optional Member-led professional development program for currently serving AmeriCorps Members
Campus Compact Learning Communities are defined as groups of AmeriCorps Members committed to meeting regularly to explore a mutually desired topic. Learning Communities are optional, primarily Member-led and strongly encouraged. Topics, meeting times and meeting structures can shift year to year. Learning communities meet at least once a month (often outside of regular service hours) and Members can expect to engage in readings, reflection, interactive activities and discussions, working collaboratively with one another to either improve skills or deepen understanding of a particular subject matter.
A Brief History
Learning Communities for AmeriCorps Members at Campus Compact of Oregon originated in the 2014-2015 program year when, after attending September IST, VISTA Members asked to receive more racial and social justice and technical training opportunities during their service year. Staff and VISTA Leaders within the Campus Compact office launched the first learning communities: the topics were Equity and Empowerment, and Evaluation and Assessment. The Equity and Empowerment Learning Community has since evolved into Campus Compact's Executive Learning Series on Equity and Empowerment (ELSEE). In 2016-2017, Learning Communities extended to all Campus Compact AmeriCorps Members and leading a learning community was extended as an opportunity for Members who were especially motivated to build their own training curricula and gain facilitation experience.
