Jennie Cha
Middle School Coordinator
Portland Public Schools -E3 (GEAR UP Program)
Hello! I use she, her, hers pronouns and identify as an Asian American daughter, sister, educator and learner. I am a proud daughter of Hmong refugee parents from Laos and sister to three siblings. I am a graduate student at Portland State University in the Masters of Social Work program with a concentration in Practices and Leadership with Communities and Organizations. My interest lies in looking at policy around education and program improvement as well as counseling in K-8.
Most of my experience is within public education in middle and high schools across North Portland and Northeast Portland with the GEAR UP Mobilizing 4 College: E3 program at Portland Public Schools. As a school site coordinator, I supported implementation of college and career readiness activities alongside near-peer mentors (i.e. taking students to view Historically Black Colleges & Universities in Alabama and Georgia and Theatre related colleges in the Northwest region). This year, my role is focused on collecting qualitative data from participants to improve program services and create sustainable practices within classrooms.
I believe in navigating my work with a holistic perspective and valuing the folx I work with as a whole person. My role in activism towards access to education and reducing the achievement gap amongst our Black and Brown students is through shifting practices of teachers and schools to be more culturally responsive and anti-racist. I value working collaboratively with families, teachers, staff and partners to advocate for the voices of our most vulnerable students.
I consider myself to be curious, reflective and always in the processing of learning and unlearning.
