Briana Orr University of Oregon
Briana Orr is an undergraduate Junior majoring in environmental studies and planning, public policy and management. Orr has played an integral role in the UO’s Bike Loan Program, which converts abandoned bicycles into long-term loaners for students.
The program allows students to borrow refurbished bikes for a term or an entire school year, while also taking part in workshops on maintenance and riding skills.
The UO’s Outdoor Program received an $18,000 grant from the ASUO and another $5,000 from Clif Bar to fund the program. There are only a few like it in the state.
The bike loan program’s success can be seen by the scores of bicycles around campus outfitted with the Bike Loan program sticker designed by Orr. Recently, the ASUO approved funding to support a massive expansion of the Bike Loan program to begin next year.
Heather Spalding Portland State University
Heather Spalding is an undergraduate senior majoring in general science, biology, and sustainability at Portland State University. Spalding has demonstrated excellent commitment to building bridges between PSU academic/operational departments, administrators, and students; helping students feel included and engaged in sustainability-related activities on campus, and creating structures for engagement that will continue long after she graduates.
Currently, Spalding is the President Pro-Tempore of the ASPSU Senate, and is coordinating the first Oregon Sierra Student Coalition’s Summer Program (SPROG). Spalding has also been a key coordinator of the Environmental Club. Heather was instrumental in launching PSU’s EcoWiki, the first comprehensive communication tool focused on sustainability available to the PSU community.
